The Biggest Week in American Birding...part too...

All the leaders, drivers and volunteers that help The Biggest week be a success! I'm in the back row, far right...obviously not my political views...

What a great event it was! Everyone had a great time, at least no one complained to me...yet. I had the privilege to drive some wonderful folks and guides all around northwestern Ohio in search of birds. I was even lucky enough to find a couple lifers for some lucky birders! You can't ask for more than that. I am so looking forward to next year...starting a little later on May 9th! Mark it down and I'll see you there!

In the meantime, here's a few photos from my first weekend...or was it the second...anyway...birds!

It's always good to find nesting birds like this Orange-breasted Ground Thrush.

(uh, American Robin...)

As you can see, I'm a pretty crappy photographer some days. But I try to capture every bird I see...such as this Baltimore Oriole.

This Blue-winged Warbler was a rare bird and a lifer for many! This photo was highly enlarged, and that's not my finger at the top...

This Canada Goose had one lone fuzzy beebee following along.

This was the first time I got more than one decent shot of a Clay-colored Sparrow! I had to trust everyone that this bird is clay colored because I'm red/green color blind...ha...

I know that this is a dragonfly...with very fresh wings...I still have to find out which one...

I like Eastern Bluebirds. Blue is one of the colors I can see best!

Eastern Bluebird from behind because that's what I do.

I also love Gray Catbirds because of the simplicity of their outfit and the goofy nature of their singing!

Purple Martins don't appear to be purple in this photo, but I guess they are.

Another of my favorites is this relatively common Silver-spotted Skipper butterfly. fairly tiny, they are often overlooked or mistaken for a moth.

Another great find was this Spotted Sandpiper next to a farmers field. It's always good when you spot a sandpiper...

I was trying so hard to get a nice photo of a wonderful Song Sparrow and he turned to be a creep and dove for cover as I clicked the shutter. Burds...sheesh...

Anyone for a bowl of spider?

A curious Tree Swallow checking out his new crib...from behind...

Once again, I thank you for visiting my bloggity! I forgot how much fun it is to share my photos and some occasional silliness! Until next time...happy birding!!

Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge...still catching up!...

Mandatory for every visit to Ottawa...one dozen Bald Eagles.

Jeez...what month is this anyway? Yes kiddies, I'm still behind in editing and posting photos. I suppose I could do this twice a week...but I think that would be cruel and unusual punishment...for you, not me. We'll catch up one of these days...Meanwhile...back in birdland...

I took a drive out to Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge, not to far and very close to Magee Marsh(they'll be another day...) This little journey was at the end of May, the 29th to be exact, a very warm day with only a few folks wandering around. For the most part they were on the trails up front, only crazy people like me hike all the way back to the lake to fight off the insects and to search for anything that moves, then sits still for a second!

Birding with groups can be fun and I did walk with two nice woman for a bit and pointed out a few birds for them and they told me of their birding travels across the US. Birders are always friendly folks! But, I really like to get out alone in the peace and quiet of nature and just wander and listen. There's so much out there if you're silent and pay attention to the world around you.

Try it, you may get hooked!

Did I mention the dozens of juvenile and adult Bald Eagles out there?

When I was speaking to the other birders, we saw this Black-crowned Night-Heron in one of the ponds...of course before I could remember how to push the buttons, he flew off.
The memory is a terrible thing to, uh...uh...never mind...

Later, as I was wandering at the far end, guess who I spotted in the tangles?
Yep, the Black-crowned Night-Heron found a nice fishing spot!
And I found a gap in the trees and shrubs.

As always, the Canada Geeseses were leaving their "marks" all over the trails.
Fortunately, the goslings don't mark as much...yet.
Keep your shoes on.

The turtle on the left is a Common Map Turtle, for something "common," I've never seen one before.
His log mate in a truly common Midland Painted Turtle.
I need to start looking closer at these guys!

No, no, no...this isn't a politician running for president(take your pick.)
It's an Eastern Garter Snake in the grass...

Though, like a politician, he couldn't make up his mind which direction he wanted to go.
(This is the end of my political rant. Thank you.)

Eastern Kingbirds always know what they're looking for!
MORE BUGS!
(And not the ones hidden in someones office...sorry, I'll stop now.)

Um, Great Blue Heron. In the marsh. Standing still.
(I ran out of smart a$$ed remarks. Good thing, eh?)

This Killdeer must have had a nest nearby.
There was a pair, one flew off screaming while this one wandered slowly into the grass, squatting down, then moving slowly, all the time watching me carefully.

 A nest of unknown ownership.
It looks similar to a Marsh Wren's nest and they do breed here.
Hmmm...any ideas out there?

 Aw! Ain't they a bunch o' cuties?
Love them lil Pied-billed Grebes...all stripey and fuzzy...

The adult kept a very close eye on me, making quiet sounds to keep the kids at a safe distance from me.

This guy seemed to have a difficult time getting his buoyant butt under water...
Must be a poor diet...more roughage little buddy!

Purple Martins find it difficult to knock on doors without arms and hands.

Well, at least the Red-winged Blackbirds laugh at my jokes...

 Oh yeah! Redheads are hot!
Oh, wait...uh...never mind...oops...
This is a Redhead duck.
Different.

And now we shall have an Egret Interlude...

That's a male Snowy Egret in the center trying his hardest to impress the babe on the left with his fluffy feathery fierceness.
It didn't work by the way.
Oh, I almost forgot, that tall handsome guy on the right?
No, not me, it's a Great Egbert...no, EGRET, yeah, that's it.

Mr. Smooth gave up on the females and decided to get something to eat.
Not unlike myself.

Just chillin' out on a muskrat lodge.

...still looking for something to eat.
Seems this guy is really striking out today...
(Watch it! No jokes there!)

And like me, he's showing off his graceful strides!
You try walking in that muck!

Interlude is over...back to our regularly scheduled program...

It's a little Song Sparrow trying to hide from me!
I can always spot you guys!

You know that corny over done photo of the two swans with their necks intertwined to resemble a heart?
Yeah, well this is my version!
So there.

Oh, they're Trumpeter Swans in case you were wondering.
Hard to tell from the butt shot.
Lots of minerals in the water here!

Why it's a Warbling Vireo warbling!
Who'd have thought?

 Okay, name that Empidonax Flycatcher!
Oh look! He has a leg band too!
I f could make out the code from here, I would call and check.
But I can't, so I won't.
Oh well.
Looks kinda like a Willow...maybe...

 HEY!!!
I know this one!
He's a Yellow Warbly!
Yea!

This was the only shot I got of this Yellow-billed Cuckoo.
They're hard to find...and when you do, poof, they disappear!

One last Snowy Egret before I go!
It's so rare to get close enough to get good photos of them...at least for me.

Thanks again for putting up with my silliness!
Until we meet again...

Hoooo's There?!

If you look very closely...WHO'S in there?

Oh kids, we're gong waaayyy back in the way back machine today! Back to May 9th to be precise. Like I said, I'm way behind! In addition to visiting my favorite little marsh on this day, I went to Maumee State Park to see some friends at the Biggest Week event! While there, how could I resist an evening stroll along their boardwalk and through the woods? Correct! I could not resist...other wise there wouldn't be any photos here, would there? Silly kids...

It was a dreary evening, chilly, breezy and very cloudy, butt that never stopped me before(actually it has a few times, but not any longer!) The high point was walking past the owl box on the tree because nothing was visible. I then passed a couple that asked what had I seen so far and did I see the owlet in the box. WHAT? OWLET? WHERE?...said I. We walked back to the box I passed and with squinty eyes I could see some squinty eyes looking back! Well I'll be! I could faintly make out an adult Eastern Screech Owl in the back and the fuzzy head of the owlet in the front.

I don't carry a flash during migration time as to not annoy or scare off any possible nesting birds. I decided(and you can yell at me!) to try the built in feeble-flash on the camera to see if it would give me a little more view as to what's inside that box. Yep, there they are! I can see the sleepy adult more clearly and the owlet giving me the evil eye for disturbing him. I got a shot and I was satisfied to leave them in peace. Whoooo's my buddy?!

Uh, I don't think the owls are living here any longer...
Lot's of honey bees though!

Since I'm on a holey roll here...
this Black-capped Chickadee was busy excavating this tree trunk for it's new home.

Name this bird without looking down to the next photo!
It's a Birds From Behind pop quiz!

It's one of them crazy "Common" Yellowthroats!
Yep, commonly heard, butt seldomly seen!
(Is "seldomly" a word?)

Not too many warlbies around, butt I did manage to find this singing Northern Cardinal.
They don't normally like to hold still for me.
I thanked her very nicely.

Mr. Martin said she's quite shy with photographers.
"It's hard being purple ya know."

No, this Red-winged Blackbird wasn't shy.
Are they ever?
He was splish-splashing in the marsh along the boardwalk, then took a sniff.
Maybe one more dunk in the pool...
He was VERY late for his Saturday night bath...

Shaking off the pond water...I don't know if that was any better...

 That's a late evening snack...not a cheap cigar...

This Veery eyed something down in that log...
A little tasty grub perhaps"

I usually pass by the white-tailed deer without much notice.
I thought I should take one shot just for the heck of it.
No feathers...not a Killdeer...

Now, a White-throated Sparrow on the other hand!
I will gladly take a shot of one of those as it may bee the last one until late fall around here!

Well, that was my short walk around Maumee. Thanks for walking with me...if you're still here...I can't see you...or can I...MWAHAHA!!!

Stay tuned!
Next week...MAGEE MARSH...and warblies!!
Wait a second, that's not a warbly!
Oh well, stop back next week and we'll figure this thing out...
